It’s A Beach Bash!

Oh yea! Sunday, August 24th, 2008, from 11am – 3pm, the AIGA San Diego is hosting a Beach Bash on Mission Bay, off Crown Point Drive, in San Diego. Potentially little-known, probably harmless, Ninthlink fact? At least 3 Ninthlink’ers live less than 1 mile from this event. I myself will be in San Francisco next weekend, and from 11am – 3pm I plan to still be recovering from that which can only be called Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, but you, you don’t have an excuse. It’s a Beach Bash.

More Than Just Serving Hamburgers

Having a sick child is hard enough, but having to travel countless miles each day to visit the child in the hospital only makes everything worse. Ronald McDonald House Charities was founded to create a ‘home away from home’ for the families of children who will have long stays in the hospital. The families are placed in a Ronald McDonald home closest to where their child is staying so they can spend as much time together as a family as possible. From August 25th through August 29th, Ninthlink Cause will be hosting a drive in honor of Ronald McDonald House Charities to provide materials for the families during their stay.

Fonts Fonts Fonts

Only From Veer

Russell and Travis were working on a client’s monthly email newsletter, and asked me if I had a referrence sheet for web-safe fonts. First, a brief rundown of why that came up at all. If you already know of the joys of Gmail vs Outlook 2k8 (or is it 7?), feel free to skip to the next paragraph. Otherwise, allow me to set the stage. See, a few years ago, a designer could design any sort of fancy fancy email newsletter, and the developer had all kinds of options in building that newsletter out, and having it remain the same when it arrived in subscribers’ mailboxes. Then Gmail came out, and decided that actual background images were no good. On that note, I found XavierFrenette.com to have a good reference of what was lost. But not all was lost, as I found you could still build the newsletter using <table>s instead of div’s, allowing you to set up the table to have a background image of its own. Sweet. But then Microsoft decided that their versions of Outlook were insecure in how they were handling html emails, since they were based off the not-so-flawless IE6 system. As a result, the latest version of Outlook renders HTML based on some archaic (old school) MS Word renderer. So background images are pretty much out, among other things. Joe Hardy gives a great overview of all those other things that we knew and loved, and have since ceased to be.

Search Engine Strategies 2008 : San Jose Conference & Expo

Only August 18th, the Search Engine Strategies Conference & Expo returns to San Jose, California. Featured speakers include Kevin Ryan, VP / Global Content Director for SearchEngineStrategies.com & SearchEngineWatch.com, author Lee Siegel, with his recently published book Against the Machine: Being Human in the Age of the Electronic Mob, Satya Nadella, Senior VP from Microsoft itself, Dan Heath, co-author of NYT’s bestselling book Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, Matt Cutts, Software Engineer from Google, and Kirsten Mangers, Co-Founder & CEO of WebVisible, Inc.

Did the powers that be pair this conference with the SF Outside Lands music festival that follows next weekend? Is San Francisco the new Austin? Do I wish I booked my plane flight to arrive earlier than Friday the 22nd? While I don’t have answers to the first two questions, the answer to the last one is Yes.

This Saturday, August 16th, Ninthlink favs The Modlins reunite with their friends The Roman Spring, plus special guests Hello Sunshine, to rock the Radio Room, formerly known as the Zombie Lounge, on El Cajon Blvd. The show is to help raise money for friends participating in Team In Training, getting ready for a marathon up in San Francisco later this year. The Team In Training program and the marathon itself will raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and this concert is a benefit to help the friends on their way. There is a $5 cover charge, and a raffle will be held as well that night, with 100% of the proceeds from the raffle AND the door going to the race fund. So come support the cause, and get a healthy dose of rock and roll to boot. Flyer for the show, after the jump…

Keep Virgin From Destroying The Internet!

The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is “a load of bollocks” and claimed they’re already doing deals to deliver some people’s content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that don’t pay Virgin in the “slow lane”, meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network. Check out the site and do what you can to protect our freedoms.

For The Good Of The Web Developer

I’ll be honest, most of the posting I’ve done so far has been for my own good (cough cough RayBans). But this, this is different. Twice in the past two working days, coworkers have asked me a question, different questions both times, but the answer has been the same. I think. Maybe the first question was more that we were trying to solve something, but that one still had an answer, the same answer as the question today, and the answer is inside the Firefox Web Developer add-on.

The question today was “What was that tool you had, to find out what font this is?” . I forget what the first question was (sorry, Aimee), but what I do remember is what both were asking for …
