Trent Reznor: Online Content and Crowdsourcing Gadfly

trent-reznor1

Bands are always looking for the best way to promote their music online, either through YouTube, Google Video, MySpace, or a record label’s efforts. Remeber that old 20th Century analog saying: “if you want something done you’ve got to do it yourself.” It certanly applies in the digital media space, where anyone can do anything and lead in trends and ideas.

Comes now NiN.com, the official website of Trent Reznor’s industrial band Nine Inch Nails. Reznor, who feuded for years with his labels TVT Records and later UMG-owned InterScope, became infamous for urging his fans to “steal” his music online, then offered the 2008 release The Slip as a free download.

Content Trends: Online Shows

burbank

When it comes to entertainment, they once said that radio would not replace newspapers or books, that TV would not replace radio, that videoplayers would not find home use, that TV shows would not work on the Internet.  However, we are seeing more and more new series shows appearing online rather than the boob tube.  This could be due to excellent quality in streaming and image delivery, and that many people, especially kids, tweens, and teens, are watching reruns of shows, movies, and DVDs, on their laptops — so why not start watching new shows?

yoda

“Buckle up, and enjoy the millescond,” the computer voice says, and: “In the last second, your hair grew five millionths of an inch.”

Sprint has a cool new pitch from San Francisco-based Goodby Silverstein & Partners, emphasizing the breath, value, and “nowness” of the community-oriented Sprint Now Network.

iPhone Trends: The Latest in Tapping the Apps

sparkle_iphone_first_virtual_world

What’s new and exciting in apps for the iPhone, one of the most popular mobile devices around?  Watching what is happening with iPhone today gives us a glimpse into tomorrw’s trends, especially for you software developers out there who are working on “The Next Big App” to tap for mobile device usage.

First, Apple put an end to uniform pricing at the iTunes store, introducing three pricing tiers (.69, .99, $1.29) that boosts the price of many of the store’s most popular tracks by 30%. The shift comes after music labels pushed for years for the right to try and squeeze more money out of their hit songs. To help surgarcoat the price increase, Apple offered to upgrade all tracks purchased to its highest quality 256 kbps AAC encoding standard, including songs previously purchased.

Twoogle? Goowitter? News from the Social Media Front

google-twitter

The internet is aflutter with rumors that Google is closing in on a deal to nab Twitter, following a report on TechCrunch last week. The idea isn’t so far fetched, given Twitter’s  popularity as a real-time search engine that can pull users away from Google. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone addressed the rumor in the company blog las Friday. He neither confirmed nor denied it, but he did try to reassure users that the company would remain independent.

Must Be Good At Googling

facebook'd

Here’s the problem : there is a web page with a form to enter your Email and Password, to log in to the website, not unlike the Facebook homepage (shown above). To be helpful, the input fields for Email and Password have some text that appears on them, to guide users to enter their Email and Password (again, not unlike the Facebook homepage). You, as a visitor, are using Mozilla Firefox, because its the cool thing to do and it makes you feel better about yourself. You enter your Email & password, hit Login, and you decide to let the browser Remember your login info. You do your business, and leave the site. The next time you come back, you click on that Email field and type in / select your Email address, and bam, Firefox populates that Password field for you. But if you aren’t careful, you might end up with that helpful “Password” text right on top of the actual ****** password that Firefox just filled in.

At least that is the problem I am working on solving. So I googled “jquery event for when firefox fills in a stored password field”, and the first result, from VerySimple, Inc., is on “Forcing Firefox to obey autocomplete=off for password fields”
