The Basics of Racing
Lesson 3: Field of View

Added by: larry on September 30, 2008

WARNING: Don’t Use This to go Get Groceries. But, it’s Standard on the Track.

Because things are happening so quickly, and at such high speeds, inexperienced drivers make the mistake of only looking at the track right in front of the car. In solo racing we refer to this as “cone blindness” and in wheel-to-wheel racing we say that the driver is “speed blind”. In performance driving and racing schools we teach students to elevate their field of view. This means that you keep your head up and look hundreds of yards ahead of the car. Of course this is easier said than done when twists and turns and changing conditions are coming at you at 140 MPH, but a good race car driver will constantly be looking up and several turns ahead. This keeps the driver in a constantly aware mode and in a good offensive posture. The driver knows what’s going on, how things are changing, and what he has to do to gain position. Next time: Basics Number 4: The Racing Line.

Just like a race car driver, your business needs to keep a high field of view. Don’t get so focused on what’s going on, right in front of you, that you develop a type of “tunnel vision”. Keep your head, and your sensibilities, up. Look several moves ahead and plan your route.

Readers are Leaders, Indeed!

More Books Than We Hoped For
Ninthlink’s September cause for Books First! was a wonderful success. The team’s goal was to get in 300 books – we exceeded that by reaching 350 titles of all kinds for children K-12. A big white box was set up in front of the office to collect new and gently used age-appropriate books of any kind – novels, biographies, textbooks, picture books—that would later be distributed across the country for kids who could enjoy, make good use, and learn from these titles. CoLab Is Here

Added by: craig on September 26, 2008

On Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 12:08pm, a group of people gathered in a room armed with a whiteboard and three 14″ pizzas. This gathering is the first of a weekly meet-up to be known as CoLab. It may not be clear what CoLab exactly is, so the question to each participant was the same: “What does CoLab mean to you?”

Lesson 2: Correct Hand Position

Added by: larry on September 25, 2008

WARNING: Don’t Use This to go Get Groceries. But, it’s Standard on the Track.

Correct hand position is essential for optimum car control and feedback from the car.
When you’re racing at speeds of over 120 miles per hour it becomes paramount to both
performance and safety. Here’s how to do it right: 1) Place your left hand at somewhere
between the 9 and 10 o’clock position on the steering wheel. 2) Right hand somewhere
between the 2 and 3 o’clock position. 3) Grip the wheel softly (this allows for better feed-
back from the car). 4) Leave your hands in this position as much as possible. If your arms
start moving to a overlapping position you should use a technique called “shuttle steering”
(we’ll discuss that in a later lesson). 5) Finally - only remove your hand from the wheel to
shift gears. When shifting is complete move your hand immediately back to the wheel.
Next time: Basics Number 3: Field of Vision.

Just like a race car, your business needs to perform at high speeds while staying under
complete control. Getting a grip on the right areas, and knowing how/when to shift gears,
is paramount to keeping it speeding down the track.

Ninthlink Commute: Craig

Added by: craig on September 25, 2008

I figure it’s time to post a partially related update to the infamous Ninthlink bike rack. I’m talking about paying homage to my daily commuter and celebrating one of the sets of wheels that makes the rack (and showing up to work) possible. I’d also like to celebrate the fact that I’ve only been over the bars twice so far, a miniscule number compared to my previous rides. In one way or another I do have to count my blessings each time I show up to work in one piece. With nothing but a steep downhill blur of traffic to zig zag through and Molly Hatchet in my headphones, things can get thick at times but I always show up at the front door with a smile on my face. Now as far as the green tip, we all know we can put a shiny gold star next to that idea along with a toothy smile from my wallet which can often times be biting me in the a** instead. All said and done the pedaling commute is a pleasant and addicting experience shared in by a number of enthusisasts disguised as heroes. It’s my cup of coffee riding into work and my relaxing sunset pedaling home. Sorry, that sounds kinda hokey, but compared to gridlock, red ligts, and stop signs it’s kinda like a 6 month buddhist retreat in the himilayas.

It’s Funny Because It’s True

Added by: alex on September 25, 2008

Props to my former roommate for finding that one. You know, like, Web 1.0 was all complicated n stuff, and Web 2.0 is like, what it is, right? Plus, bonus points for the icanhascheezburger reference. And I think I used the right “it’s”, but I’m never really sure, really. That is all. Maybe call this the precursor to the Friday Office Funnies. Happy Thursday.
