X-Cart Announces Facebook Tab

Something in the latest X-Cart community newsletter caught my eye, and I’m not just talking about the questionable grammar. They were happy to announce launching a service to bring Products from an X-Cart store in to a Facebook tab. The service isn’t free, but (if it is easy to manage,) the benefit of being able to market products to all 500 million+ Facebook users, and link out to your eCommerce site, should more than pay for itsef.

Hello World!

Hello world, my name is Ian (pronounced “eye-yen”). I am a busy guy ’round these parts at Ninthlink. But I wanted to give a quick intro on who I am and what you can expect from me.

  1. I am a big Chargers fan.
I am still hurting after that loss to the Jests, I mean Jets. 13-3 season and seriously, how did that happen?
  2. Last year I made the switch from PC -> Mac
You would be calling me a hypocrite last year as I was always calling those PC versus Mac commercials “dumb.” Now I totally understand. I used to think using BootCamp to run Windows 7 was awesome (I still do), I completely erased that partition and now I am a full Mac convert (fanboy?). Although, I still run Windows XP in VirtualBox, just to check for web standards when developing.
  3. I love Rubik’s cubes.
Want to see a Rubik’s cube solved in under 14 seconds? Want to see it being solved by a Lego Mindstorms bot?
  4. I love code and programming.
I’ll be randomly sharing my thoughts about this, so hopefully it’s useful. Maybe if you’re lucky, I’ll share my .vimrc file for you to bask in the glory that is Vim — the king of editors. In any case, check out how 7 years of coding is like — visually.

I think I might’ve gone link happy, but I have to hook you in some how right?

Dream Big: Then Plan Small

Sure, it crashed in the end, but that’s just a case of needing better steering (maintenance!). What’s important is that passion led to a vision and a goal, which led to careful planning, convertible into attainable, measurable assignments (wheels, a large deck, etc.). It wasn’t about the money, it was about the joy and success. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this?

What the heck is PHP?

I’ve encountered a lot of challenging situations as a PHP programmer, from the big things (creating and optimizing complex applications that access millions of rows of data) to the smaller things (figuring out where to put more reminders after I’ve run out of room for post-its on my monitors). One of the problems I face most often is trying to explain to people what I do for a living. Generally, I just answer with “I’m a programmer” and people drop the subject. Who really wants to hear about code in a social situation? A small percentage of people are not deterred by this, however, and will ask for more details. This is where it gets tricky. Saying that I’m a web programmer is true, but makes most people think I write HTML. The truth is that even though much of our world runs on PHP, most people have absolutely no idea what it is. So here’s a crash course:

HTML by itself is what we call static. That means that it will look the same each time you see it. The only way to change the information on the page is to go in and change the actual file. This is great for simpler websites or websites that don’t need to change their information very often. Some websites require more functionality, however. That’s where PHP comes in. READ MORE

Samuel Mockbee created a philosophy for not only teaching architecture but showing his students how to build and how to make a difference in the community you live in. He Created a school call “The Rural Architecture.” There is a great documentary on his life and the amazing effect he left on the world.
